What is a NABERS rating?
NABERS (National Australian Built Environment Rating System) is Australia’s trusted framework for measuring and comparing the environmental performance of buildings. A NABERS Energy rating is based on actual energy consumption—typically electricity and gas—using 12 months of verified utility data. The data is analysed and normalised for factors such as hotel size, occupancy, operating hours and climate to provide a fair comparison with similar properties.
The result is a 1–6 star rating, with three stars representing average performance and six stars representing market-leading efficiency. NABERS measures how a building actually performs, while Green Star assesses how a building is designed and built. NABERS uses real-world operational data—such as energy and water consumption over a 12-month period—to benchmark an existing hotel against comparable properties. Green Star, by contrast, assesses buildings against a broader set of design, construction and sustainability criteria.
